I wrote my original post in a hurry - so a bit more explanation.
ES
If you would like your own board to be delusional on I'd be glad to give you one
Could I call it "The
Rational SWR Research Group"? (only joking - I'd consider it very impertinent of me to think I had the knowledge and expertise to lead SWR research
). I don't make any claims on my own rationality - I'd rather be Cap'n Kirk than Mr Spock any day - but that shows I'm also delusional because unfortunately I'm more of a Scotty character than Kirk :D. On the question of tolerance, it is not an issue of hocus breaking site rules and I would not want to stop him posting but, as I said on the Blunt Words thread, hocus seems to have had
some sort of special license or latitude to make factually incorrect and/or extremely biassed and/or irrational and/or very selective statements and there appeared to be a reluctance to correct him (generalising only). I can only conclude that this is a vote of sympathy for the way he was treated at TMF . In my reponses to hocus this means I have to be careful to try and guess what might be sensitive issues and this puts a constraint on my response - as gummy might say - it ain't fun anymore (BTW anybody seen gummy lately since his comment on one of hocus's "invalidity" posts - perhaps it ain't fun for him any more either
)
But seriously, although I've used the internet extensively, I have quaint, old fashioned views on internet boards which is why I've only ever become a member and contributed to two boards, NFB and one other. My personal standards are that I have no wish to be associated with boards that include elements of a personal agenda or propoganda and/or self-aggrandizement and/or personal gain. The Hocus Board regrettably includes all three with hocus's continuing personal vendetta against intercst; hocus's repetitively strident claims on being the first on the valuation issue and his demands that everyone thank him for it and hocus's intention to use NFB and The Hocus Board material to write a book.
I'm in an age group where retirement is a continual topic of conversation but internet usage may be limited. Previously I've recommended to friends to have a look at NFB because the two original boards avoid completely any personal agenda/propoganda/self-aggrandizement/personal gain slant. There is now the very slanted SWR Research Group board which regrettably, within NFB, looks to be on the same footing as the two main boards i.e. there is no indication in its title that it's a personal board and it's included in the same list as the two main boards. I'm unable to choose not to be a member of the Hocus Board because a member of NFB automatically is a member of all boards at NFB - I can well imagine hocus claiming in future that he has 184 members of his board. To me, all of this gives a legitimacy to the Hocus Board that I don't think it deserves. From what I have heard went on at the REHP board it has, in my eyes as an outsider, reduced the credibility of the TMF as a whole. To have the Hocus Board seeming to an outsider to be on the same footing as the FIRE and Index boards perhaps has the potential to similarly appear to reduce the credibility of NFB.
So, getting very long-winded, I have no problem with hocus having his own personal board and doing what he likes with it. I'd be happy if I can choose which boards I sign up to as a member and I can exclude the Hocus Board. Presumably that may be administratively difficult therefore, as an alternative, I'd be happy if NFB had a seperate section called Personal Boards and the titles of the boards indicated that they were personal e.g. hocus's board was included in the Personal Board list with a title such as Hocus's SWR Research Group.
However I don't expect ES to change NFB just to make
me happy :D, so I'll check back in a couple of weeks or so and see how I feel then. But I doubt I'll continue - I joined NFB for informative entertainment - I don't want to have to exercise discipline by ignoring something I find irritating (I have to do enough of that in real life :roll:)
