Is it annualised or yearly average?

In other words, when a 4.5% price growth and 4.2% dividends issued is stated as the historical average, is that with the price of the stock riding up and down thru peaks and valleys? Is it a reliable barometer in that sense?

John: Have you been able to ascertain the price growth and average dividends for your more favored 1920 onward market performance? That might be an interesting comparison as I'm using stats from 1927 - 1997 from Bogle's book (Siegel data). I'm assuming this would satisfy you, sir?
