Duh? The numbers intercst posted don't say that - at least to me. I'll go back to what I read into it. Bull markets are really nice - especially when they occur just when 'you' retire. Someone(in hindsight) will always have a better portfolio than yours. If you retire into a high valuation market (I...

REHP 2005 Portfolio Update
just skimmed thru the article - with my preprejudiced glasses on. Here's my non math initial thoughts: 1. Boy was I lucky taking ER in 1993. History's tailwind was kind to me. 2. There is always somebody smarter than me in hindsight(Dent, Buffet). BUT - all praise be to Bogle my quasi 60/40 Index(vi...

JWR Now I'm confused - nothing new there. To keep things simple, I try to use key benchmarks for enlightenment: Vanguard Balanced Index(60/40) and Wellesley managed 40/60 for the value camp - read dividends, although a 'very' loose relationship. I am still struggling to understand what Vanguard is t...

Lets take my two planned income streams(skipping pension and SS for now). One is basically 60/40 balanced index IRA - 9 years away from RMD. Which I'm thinking of switching to 40/60 or lower. At current valuations (sans any number crunching) - ? not forgoing too much upside potential by damping SD v...

Interesting that BusinessWeek expressed scepticism - citing numbers purporting the 'new things' did it fact beat the old. I cheat by passing on who beats what. In the distribution phase, Ben Graham said it best(for me) in 1958, appendix 3 of the Intelligent Investor by quoting Shakespear and Ovid. H...

Volitility's role in distribution and accumulation
JWR I believe at one time you mentioned examining the role of volitility in portofolios. If rebalancing causes a penalty thru history depending on valuation, what happens to the ER at various span times? The classic 'old school?' ala Vanguard as exemplified by the Target Retirement Series says hold ...

I did not and do not carry health insurance (since 1992), age 49 - 61 now. Health insurance costs would have derailed my retirement. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS COURSE FOR ANYONE ELSE! We had 300k in financial assets between us (me and girlfriend). She had health coverage through the union. The story wo...

Seems like every generation rediscovers what it already knows. Bogle often goes back to Bachelor's 1900 paper. Ben Graham thought the market valued dividend dollars more than earnings dollar. Petey put some interesting links up recently - divining the charts - you might come to see the changing tren...

Keep it simple - buy the Vanguard Target or Lifestrategy fund nearest 4% yield - Income nowadays(20% stocks) and switch/blend funds when you can get 4% with higher stock component. Not precise - but might have some merit handgrenade wise. Note that at extremes - even the income series is below 4% to...
