Hi mannfm11, The dreaded giving your money to an insurance company in this day and time could be the only salvation for early retirement. One could attempt to do the same thing with corporate bonds, but again we have the threat of default. Since you work in insurance, can you give some evaluation of...

Hi raddr, I didn't mean that it's wrong to hold a richly valued asset class, just that it's funny that some index investors worry more about squeezing a couple of hundreths of a percent out of an asset class by obsessing over expenses than they do about whether it is really worth the purchase price ...

For example, some investors fret and worry about paying a few basis points in trading costs or expense ratios but think nothing of buying an index at 2 or 3 times it's normal valuation when there are plenty of better alternatives out there. That would be me. :shock:US large-caps became underweight ...

I say leave it alone. JWR, Mike and a few others seem to be getting some good use out of it. What folks argue about, and link to, at some other board doesn't have to be our problem.

Hi Wanderer, Still need: 1. Commodities (besides energy). May buy individually but would prefer a mutual fund. VGPMX still closed. Haven't really looked at BGEIx yet. VGPMX is apparently reopening soon, with an expanded mandate: http://www.nofeeboards.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=2263 There's also PCR...

FI for me, too. I'm lucky enough to enjoy my job, and have no particular plans to try to retire early. On the other hand, it would certainly be nice not to have to depend on anyone else (like employer) for survival, even if I am still working. And to have a safe buffer against disaster.

Hi raddr, I think I have confused you - sorry. Each 75 year sequence is taken as is and then run through the SD and mean return filters. IOW, nothing within the sequence is manipulated or shaved, etc. I do understand that the sequences are not modified, merely accepted or rejected. But what I...

Hi raddr, I don't know that this is the right way to implement a mean reverting strategy but it seems to model actual historical results quite well. Hopefully I am not confusing you further. I think I finally understand what your procedure is, up until the last part perhaps. How do you do the...

Indeed. I mentioned in the top comment that the first link is the latest version of the newsletter I could find. Seemed to have all the latest ETFs I've heard about. Since you said you didn't know if people were reading your links here, I have been going through them. At the end of each issue of ETFR there is a list of all ETFs in the world. It might be nice if this could somehow be referenced on the NFB links page. As if ES doesn't already have enough to do. :)...

Fascinating table.

Japan looks as bad as the S&P500 as of Jan. 2002. The best bet looks like Sweden :!:

I wonder if they'll update their table.

Hi raddr, Does this clear things up at all? A little, but my questions are multiplying. :) Let me take this step-by-step: For most runs I calulate the historical avg. return for the portfolio and then the 1 yr., 10 yr., and 40 yr. SD's. As I note in the post, the longer time periods show lower SD's ...

Hi WiseNLucky, But ETFs are a viable option. My only problem with them is that they are expensive for the small investor who has a small amount of money now, a little more next week, and so on. The only option then is to remain uninvested until savings are sufficient to lower the cost of entry into ...

Hi Petey, Tell me, do you plan to buying international sourced ETFs like has been suggested to me? Any catch you eye? Your ETF fees are significantly cheaper than ours but that may change if we get more competition. At the moment Barclays investment arm dominates in the UK. I'm certainly thinking ab...
