The Chinese Box

Long ago and far, far away - when I was 21 in Seattle - we had this old (35) engineer tell us about the Chinese box. His(old country) parents ran a resturant - put nightly proceeds into a box under their bed. The box had everything - Jade, savings bonds, a few stocks, cash, collectible coins, ordina...

Jwr's post on many different objectives is worth reading several times. My version is - understand the horse you rode in on - POGO (not Peanuts as JWR reminded me). I once posted early on - on the other forum - 'the perfect retirement spot' - naively pictured in my mind - all ER's with aloha shirts,...

Bogle is fond of Lord Keynes - along the lines of: Understanding history is important - and understanding WHY history was what it was is even more important. The exact quote is floating around somewhere on Bogle's website. May 1958 (after the 57 recession) Graham laments The New Speculation in Commo...

Duh - the word has been out for a while. Circa the 1700's - Issac Newton per the myth got hit in the head with head with an apple and lost his shirt in the South Seas Bubble - not exactly true - but the point is - math and people don't always compute exactly. The apple/Newton's laws worked and the g...

In fact - the contrarian curmudgeon in me says now might be the time to accerate movement toward 100% stocks - with the caveat that they be dividend, Lowell Miller, Mergent types. JWR's recent data runs in this area are fascinating - but one had better be ready for some thrills and chills from "...

I meant Bogle should be throwing the fruit - along with Walter L. Morgan (1929) and Ben Graham (1972) who expressed appriopriate skepticism based on valuations at points in history. Even Bogle cracked for a brief period on Wellington fund in the 70's before they got back on the value track. Whether ...

Duh - sounds like the same old bull crap - I heard in the 60's, 70's, and early 80's - usually after a market downturn. It was bull then, and it's bull now - know matter how pretty they restate it. Publish or perish! - one more time. De Gaul and the Norwegian widow ride - or Angus Maddison if you re...

Let me summarize my thoughts - if only for my benefit - if anybody else can pick up some ideas for their own ER - so much the better, 1, I started this in earnest in 1993 with the idea of a small supplimental income stream with COLA type properties since my defined pension coming in 1998 had no cost...

Hmmmmm - perhaps it's time for some crusty curmudgeonism's before we get back to the numbers. 1. Having recovered somewhat from the other forum (laddered divided stocks) with the help of JWR's numbers - I shall attempt to regain some courage and give my 'individual dividend stocks' some respect. 2. ...

JWR 1. So my hobby stocks have morphed from 'don't get no respect' to dividend stocks worthy of due diligence. 2. My 50/50 defensive investor balanced index - Bogle/Graham - the horse I rode in on - gets put out to pasture. Speed is not my strongpoint. Chickenheartedness is still a viable investment...

The Dividend Duck

Wall Street never fails to feed the ducks: NYSE,BDV, Black Rock Dividend Achievers Trust, picked from top 100 highest yield Mergent's Dividend Achiever's, will hold 60-90 issues with rebalancing to stay diversified, expense 0.85%, yields 6.75% bought below 13.75/share - fixed div .90/shr. Hmmmm - lo...

It'll take a couple more reads for what you posted to soak in. My initial impression is - since 'my dividend portfolio' marked to todays market has a 4.2% yield - the prudent thing to do - is to evaluate each holding as to 'expected div. growth' recognizing that that's tough - But 2.5 - 3.0 % vs 4.2...

Hmmmmm - maybe a few will go back to the future and reread Ben Graham - his 50/50 defensive investor has worked thru all seasons(at least 30 yrs for me) so far including the minor warm up 2000-2003. Even though I do it with the modern balanced index funds - and the big dog 60/40 type has a SEC yield...

JWR Read and report - look forward to your comments. I'm pretty much hard core Bogle - costs matter (CMH) - and De Gaul of course - TSM - buy the U.S. at the lowest possible cost. Now in hobby stock (aka dividend stocks) land AND ten years into ER - I still have to struggle sometimes (ala POGO) to l...

I forgot - I guess our take out is classed as look back variable sort of keyed off yield (overall portfolio) - sometimes take some - sometimes let it ride - wouldn't look pretty on a spread sheet.

Theorywise - I'm mostly Boglehead core and explore school with a nod to old school - ie - watching the yield on all my investments. ala POGO - 75% balanced index - hands off Lifestrategy (has a tad int'l and asset allocation fund in it) - let the computers rebalance. Hobby stocks are dividend orient...

It's amazing how many - blank looks I have gotten over the last ten years when I tell people my fundamental stock technique is: BUY HIGH, SELL LOW! I guess what I'm trying to say - is set up a watch list of companies that you might like to own - figure out at what price to dividend they might be bought, and wait.
