raddr - yeah, the "fawning admirers" thing really torqued arrete. I was like, "well, what part of that is inaccurate? she clearly admires intercst, says words to that affect all the time. And FAWN implies seeking favor by servile flattery or exaggerated attention <waiters fawning ove...

Hi Jenifer and Chips, I am sort of amazed by the level of math on these boards. I think I am pretty math adept compared to the average person but I don't exactly follow everything here. It is great to have all these ex big five auditors, mathematicians, engineers and radiologists (!) around. LOL :!...

And what can you say about Arrete? She's a mouse in the corner for years while intercst gives fallacious advice causing board members to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars of hard-earned wealth. That doesn't bother her. She says nothing while his actions causes a board she has been participating...

The fundamental problem I have with intercst's study is that it expects past performance will be future performance. Nice answer to the above quote from ataloss. What intercst apparently doesn't understand is that we can have an even better return over the next 130 years (not very likely IMO) and s...

Would you mind sharing your opinion on what you feel is currently a good value, and the methodology you use to determine it? And your data source? I have in my mind a foggy concept of a spreadsheet with historical high/low/average information about valuation of asset classes, the current valuation ...

For a plan to survive for longer time-periods, even assuming away the other flaws of the approach, you would need to take a lower annual withdrawal. But who knows in advance whether he is going to live 30 or 40 or 50 years? In board discussions, the 30-year number is generally used as the reference...

I'm talking about making relatively rare, progressive shifts in asset allocation that are primarily keyed to valuation. For instance, my allocation to S&P 500 is pretty low right now, but I'm hoping to increase that if/when the valuation improves. I have in mind that I'll increase it a bit when...

I had an abrupt awakening when TMF introduced fees, waiving them for the select few, and excluding me from that recognition. We heard people like EdWe telling us that we should realize that TMF was a vanity press, where we should expect to pay for the privilege and pleasure of expressing ourselves....

Greetings John & Wanderer :) I can't quite see why he bothers. What he should do is invite all those folks over here. They'd be better off and he could put that money toward retirement. He should probably do this just on principle alone. :? Yeah, I'm not so sure I'd make that kind of an ...

Hi John,

Money laundering, Ponzi scheme, whatever. IMHO anyone who falls for a 30% per year "risk free" investment has no business lecturing anyone else about the NFB, finance, etc. :D

raddr - per vanguard, vfinx is down 22.15% last year. does the 18.2% reflect the better bond returns? w Yes, the 18.2% number is calculated thusly: S&P500 return*0.75 + cash return*0.25 - inflation rate for 2002 - expenses

Hypothetical Y2K retiree update

Now that we have all of the data for 2002 here's an update on the hypothetical retiree who quit his job at the end of 1999. This was the original discussion: http://nofeeboards.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=159 Here is is the update: As you can see, the retiree taking an inflation adjusted 4% per year ...

Here's a table constructed from ataloss' life expectancy data link for a couple, both 48 years old: The life expectancies are assumed to be equal to the total population for both. As you can see, there is almost a 10% chance of at least one of them living 50 years. There is a greater than 80% chance...

If I am doing excel right that 10% life expectancy (for the hypothetical 48 year old male) is age 91 ie 43 years of portfolio withdrawals I get a slightly different result: l(x) 92,629 * 0.1 = 9263 = age 92-93. For both sexes together it looks like 94-95 is the right answer - i.e. a 10% chance of 4...
