Fear/apprehension/worry is normal. In my case they took away my wheel(layoff). After being in the looking for a 'good' job mode for about a year - I noticed somewhere along the way the 'gears in my brain' had shifted to 'you don't have to work anymore' That was 1993 and counting her assets (Er finan...

Chickenheartedness. Perhaps not a real investment word but it 'minimizes regret'. Bernstein has recommended reading Edelson for value averaging and my trusty Moneypaper provides a % investec number for those who follow their value ave. method. I try to pick a suitable entry point for the DRIP - loos...

I just do it - last year taxable dividends/dividend stocks were 40% percent of income (no SS or IRA takeout) - yet. I'm messy enough to perhaps not label it a strategy - although I did take some good humored flak under the topic 'dividend stock ladders' on another forum. Basically I buy DRIPs via Mo...

My read of Bernstein's Birth of Plenty says that the Dutch - way way back in the early days of capitalism went abroad in search of yield, and I believe Victorian England tryed some of that in a wild and wooly place called America. Wonder if it's our turn in history's story. Question two - we are rel...

I give Bernstein an o.k. - but I'd previously read 'The 15 Stock Diversification Myth' on the Efficient Frontier website(use his search option) - interestingly his conclusion is exactly opposite of mine - individual stocks are worth a shot for at least some of "my money in my individual circums...

O.k. John Can we test some of the 'old saws' I heard during my savings years - namely 10% long term return on stocks and dividends contributing almost 40% of the return. SWAG - ? 6% cap gain and ? 4% div return. Probably a myth I know - but can we construct a data set that takes 2/3 of the mythical ...

Look back variable SWR

I know that Gummy and Bernstein have done studies on variable SWR. My chickenheart is still take the div/interest from a balanced index portfolio and let the principle ride. But - that said - given the valuation studies done here - are there any thoughts on variable take technique (higher than SEC y...

And then there are the all time retro blockheads(ala Charlie Brown of Peanuts) who take the div/interest and let the principle ride. People used to do that - long, long ago.

Heh heh heh heh heh. But I'll be the first to admit 2-3% of OUR portfolio is er chewy in today's market.

Heh heh - I of course am timing the market all the time. By holding balanced index funds, the computers are continuosly rebalancing to hold a fixed stock/bond ratio. Sometimes I don't even watch. As for my small stash of individual stocks - I prefer to buy high and sell low. Buy a dividend stream pl...

Heh heh - DeGaul and the Norwegian widow ride on. Hurry up and do nothing. Watching grass grow and paint dry is frenetic activity co...

In the end it's numbers. Remember Bogle's folly, all the flash and trash between Vanguard and Fidelity in the 'old' days. Convincing someone who has his mind made up is like ---- into the wind. No wonder Bogle is a grumpy old phart - er crusty curmudgeon since I'm a Boglehead. Index funds anyone? I ...

Poop! I wanna be a crusty old curmudgeon like Bogle when I grow up. Bogle's damm fool index funds, un-American and a few other things at the start, Reagan started out as a liberal new deal Democrat, and probably many other examples could be brought to mind. The flack/wisdom ratio will always be high...

The ducks are quacking, the ducks are quacking! Feed them - Blackrock Dividend Achievers Trust got another plug for retired investors in my Dick Young's Intelligence Report(I subscribe to it and Moneypaper). Yup - you're right about Pogo. I can picture the cartoon in my minds eye. Peanut's is what I read now a days. ?Senior moment?

Be careful about P/E 10 - on reading Mergent's - individual value may arrive before the general market - especially if you have some - er, ahem - lagniappe money.

De Gaul - balanced index - my equity % is picked based on my AGE - not whether the market is high, low, fairly priced. The computers at vanguard don't give spit about my emotions.
