It is difficult to believe that I-Bonds paying just 1.05% can give a 40-year retiree 3.07% inflation-adjusted withdrawals. If so, it certainly gives one pause. The thing here is that it is crucial to ensure one actually gets that return and does not suffer safe withdrawal rate losses set against to...

For the two days in which the Alternate SWR Methodology board remained in existence, we saw what our discussions will look like when honest and informed posting on investing is permitted once again. There was no deception on that board. No intimidation. No word games. No personal attacks. No nonsen...

The contrast with what we saw on the intercst-controlled boards couldn't have possibly been greater. On the intercst boards, we saw no substance. We saw hate. We saw fear. We saw desperation. Nothing that could help anyone win financial freedom early in life. Nothing that would cause a person holdi...

"Conservative" may be a misnomer, but the portfolio is intended to survive a decade like the 1970s and keep on tickin'. Sample portfolio:~ Global Common Stocks - 35% Global Real Estate - 20% Timber - 10% Oil & Gas | Metals & Minerals - 5% Absolute Return - 10% 10-Year TIPS - 20% =...

At least Dory36 included a link to this site.

It looks as if El Supremo is the sole occupant in the leadership position among the discussion boards.

Everything was over before I had a chance to participate in a meaningful manner.

Have fun.

Our Standard Analysis Procedures

Our Standard Analysis Procedure We have been applying these procedures ever since we discovered the tight relationship between Historical Surviving Withdrawal Rates and the percentage earnings yield of the S&P500, 100E10/P. We have had considerable success. 1) The first step is to collect histo...

Were these run the same way as TIPS or rushed because you were short on time when you posted? When you can, I would appreciate an extension like with TIPS out to 45 and 50 years to cover 50 years olds too. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on my long post when you have more time. I have put t...

When you have time I would like to see this for the 1.05% I-Bond case. That is cleaner for me as there are no tax issues on it though one is restricted to a total of $75k in I-Bonds revolving over 5-years. Petey Here are the numbers that you asked for (and a few others). The payments from 1.05% I-B...

Thanks by Ira/Sep Custodian you mean at Vanguard or at the Treasury site? Kathyet Vanguard. I agree with Mike. I-Bonds are tax advantaged and you must hold them for a year before selling. I recommend holding them in a taxable account. TIPS are tax disadvantaged and you can sell them at any time on ...

This may be an easier way. You can call and/or email the question to your IRA/SEP custodian. He better know the answer. After all, he would have to do it. You cannot give him I-Bonds. You can only give him dollars. He cannot send I-Bonds to you. He must send you dollars. Those are the IRA rules. [Of...

1.05% net. 2% TIPS is gross and so net of taxes and brokerage fees, not much in it. Neither offer attractive yields and even the spend-it-down-in-30-years plan I assume would not deliver much beyond 2% on 1.05% rate per year. You able to compute that for me, John? Also would be interested to see th...

Can I-Bonds be bought for a ira/sep and if you can how do you do it? Kathyet I don't know. Here is what I do know. The main requirement for an IRA is to have a qualified custodian of the account. This includes banks and stock brokers. I do not know whether there are special restrictions related to ...

If you are able I would like to see the numbers for 2% TIPS over 30 to 50 years at 5 year increments. I would also like to see how it might work on UK I-Bonds at their 1.05% tax-free yield with the same sell down approach. Thank you for a series of outstanding posts. You have some great ideas. I am...

TIPS Equivalents

I wrote in my recent Overview post: Of course, there is a problem with 2% TIPS. They no longer exist. The issue is whether a person can actually construct a good equivalent portfolio. There is a requirement to be able to handle emergency cash needs. There is another requirement to match inflation. T...

As a take off to the annuity thread - and given the current environment. Suppose you are planning to ER today - and have no expertise in stocks, bonds, real estate, etc., etc. What would you do? I would preserve capital. Cash at zero percent nominal interest is much better than a 10% or 20%+ loss. ...

I'm still not happy with any plan that expects a portfolio life of just 30 years. That might work for someone wishing to retire age 60 and accepting that they'll be broke at 90 (if they live that long), but for anyone younger I don't see it as viable at all. Thank you, peteyperson. Thirty years is ...

Something Worth Knowing

Here is something worth knowing from my latest analysis. It is from Overview: Using both Initial and Current Valuations dated Thursday, Mar 17, 2005. http://nofeeboards.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=3564 An alternative baseline These data shout at us to abandon stocks entirely at today's valuations.
