Was it required reading? No, not for me. My older brother turned me on to the story. It may have been required reading for him. I haven't read the story in over 30 years, but I remember it had an effect on me. I grew up in a small town dominated by religious fundamentalists (including my parents an...

I find that bunny terrifying. What's it hiding? Why is it disguised? It was just an innocent blue bunny, minding it's own business, when it was kidnapped and force to wear the Groucho nose. Pictures were taken for purposes of blackmail. Actually, that was my children's idea of a joke many years ago...

I haven't thought about the Fool in years. I stumbled onto their site several years ago and became an avid lurker for many months. I took one of their online courses on retirement plannning and started posting fairly regularly. I got a lot out of TMF. When they decided to charge a fee, I struggled w...

Sigh. . . . SG: yes, I know you made other points, and I am not trying to say that what John R. is doing is correct. I think he has gone over the edge of data-mining, and have tried to argue with him about what he can really say. He is convinced his assumptions are reasonable. Fine. It's his money,...

...FWIW, it is not PE10 vs SWR that is supposed to be linear, it is 1/PE10 vs SWR. It does actually look pretty linear if you throw away all the data before 1923. John R. has given a plausibility argument for why this should be so. . . Bpp First, recognize that this is only one of 5 points I made. ...

Hi hocus, . . . If William Bernstein showed up at one of the FIRE/Passion Saving/Retire Early boards to post in an honest and informed way on what the historical data says re SWRs, would you refer to him as a troll and seek to have him banned from further participation, SalaryGuru? No. I would not r...

. . .There was a post by Nords at the Early Retirement Forum a few days ago in which he advised a newcomer to take a look at the REHP study to determine what is safe. Not one community member challenged that advice. . . Yes, I remember that post. And not one of the dozens of successful and seasoned...

. . . We have shown that current valuations and dividend yields are well outside of the historical range used in those studies. The older 4% number is not safe. . . . The fact that valuations based on backward looking metrics are high is well-known. That fact does not logically imply your conclusio...

SG - Who said I was talking about you? . . . . TH, I don't want to waste more of anyone's time on this, but in answer to the above question: You did. You addressed me specifically. You wrote SalaryGuru - You give sage advice. . . then followed up with the paragraphs that I quoted. I can only say th...

I was a part of the TMF boards before they went to the dark side. I've been a participant in both of intrcst's boards. And I participate in Dory36's board (as well as this one). I've seen my share of trolls come to the boards -- in some cases the same one over and over again. In every case they hurt...
