Invention of early retirement
Living from his investments was my Dad's dream and I guess I picked it up also. I remember starting a savings account while I was still in high school. I don't know where my Dad got his ideas from. Most likely not from FDR. He was a staunch Republican and didn't have much use for him  I read th...

Great post and I agree with your statement about moving to reasonably valued asset classes. To me, your results show that trends in the stock market can last for decades. The 1980's and 90's were, of course, a time of a historical bull market and the period preceding them from the mid 1960's to 1982...

Mutual Funds
For a scathing discussion of the recent preferential treatment for large investors scandal see http://www.fundalarm.com/hilights.htm (After Oct 2003 look in the archives). I say the h*ll with them. Either use index funds or buy and hold individual stocks. With index funds, you can compare performanc...

Let's not get stuck on this
I say just put in some general statement such as the one suggested and some links and leave it at that. The links can be contributed by the particpants in the many discussions so all sides can be heard. In the meantime, there are still important topics to be covered. I took a quick look and I don't ...

Topic should be sticky
Supremo
I suggest topics like this one should be "sticky."
How do you do this? The FAQ just says that the administrator determines whether a user can do it. But the new topic screen does not seem to have an option for it.

Soft stuff book
Get a Life: You Don't Need a Million to Retire Well by Ralph Warner The author goes a little bit overboard for my taste, but the emotional/social part of retirement is as important as the financial IMO. The author has a good discussion about how to do volunteering so you don't end up stuffing envel...

Only financial reasons for returning to work?
One reason many retirees have had to go back to work is because of poor financial planning, I think that is one reason. Another reason may be boredom and need for the social interactions that you get from a job. Yet another is the large impact of wage earnings compared with income from savings. It ...

FIRE FAQ organization
It seems like a big job for one person. How about starting a sticky (pinned) thread where people could contribute posts with questions and answers? Later, volunteers could go through and combine similar questions into single posts. For example, a post might be: What are some books about early retire...
