Interesting Post ! - I have always subscribed to the Less is More theory - But in a slightly different way. Life is a Balance and to fully enjoy it you have to have some possesions to be comfortable, but not too many to be uncomfortable. I do believe in quality and would rather have 1 Car such as my...

BenSolar, This has already been done. The retirement age has been gradually raised according to when you have been born. This in itself will not save 'the system' - It is a pay as you go system and the money that is collected today pays for benefits, as well as the War in Iraq. 20 years ago, when I ...

KenM, but I'd still prefer the future possibility of $30k in the US rather than the certainty of my own $3K Understand that not every couple may be eligible for 30K. - Most all of Senior citizens in the U.S. today had only one income earner and may not have paid the max amount into the Social Securi...

KenM, 30K per year in the U.S. is not that hard to come by for S.S. - My wife and I each had 6 figure incomes and paid the max into S.S. for over 15 years. We should each get over $15K per year in S.S. Retirement Benefits. I will start drawing in about 9 years and my wife about 8 years after that. T...

Wow ... In the US healthcare and property taxes alone will eat 12-15k/year. I am shooting for the 50-60k/year (and debt free) ... so it'll take a lot more than $1m If you get any kind of Social Security or Pension it may not be more than $1 Mil. My wife and I together should get about 30K per year ...

Yup - these statistics does not necessarily mean you are bad off if you don't have much savings. I have a friend of mine and he was a school principal and his wife a school teacher. Together they have pensions with COLA that are over $120K per year. They have little savings and spend most all of the...

The only debt that I'm considering in retirement is a reverse mortgage. That way I won't have to worry about paying it off. :D

. For example, Peter Lynch has said that a 100% growth stock portfolio can support a 7% SWR. This is of course way out to lunch and any knowledgeable discussion of SWRs would contradict this. Sure it would, if you are 95 years old! :D That is why the whole concept of a SWR is loony. It is great for...

I agree that SWR is calculated beyond a usefull number. I think a guidline like 4% is helpfull, but beyond that it is acedemic. One of biggest Areas that SWR ignores is that Retirees should want to spend more money before age 80 than after age 80. I have older friends and spending money after age 80...

BenSolar, Yes, The PE is a bit high but will the correction come in the way of a falling market or will earnings finally catch up to justify it. That is the 64 million dollar question! Chips, Yes, I also play these same scenarios. I am only planning on a 3% real return over the next 40 years. Anythi...

Your thoughts on the Stock Market's recent run-up lately.

Think the Dow will ever see 8,000 again?

In other words do you think this is real? There was a lot of pessimism here last winter, and lots of folks thought the Market was overvalued.

What are your thoughts today?

assume you are working on 3% real in the sense that you won't have a 100/0 stock to cash/bond allocation will you? Presumably cash and bonds won't deliver as much, thus dragging down the overall return on the total portfolio? I plan on having my asset allocation change with the times. Right now I a...

Yes, I thought about this myself. Unfortuately it seems that the stuff that you have to buy every year to survive is the stuff that inflation affects the most. Examples are Home heating costs, electricity and food. The stuff that is cheaper are things like color TVs - but I have not bought one in 10...

No one knows what's going to happen, and what kind of portfoilo will produce what kind of gains. After the run- up of the market of the last 10 years, most savvy investers agree that returns of the last 10 years were unusual and that we won't likely see a repeat. But here is a possible scenario. I s...

I currently have my plan set up for a 6% return with 3% inflation. So I'm shooting for a 3% real return. If this things turn out better, I'll know waht to do with the extra dough.

Moral of the story is that if you keep predicting a Crash, Depression, Downturn you'll eventually be correct. There are people that took Ravi (He was a Professor...

think I've said it before, but I continue to find it a nice paradox that the older I get, the longer the tables say I'm going to live This reminds me of the weather forecasts here in Minnesota in the winter.
