At the NFB board ataloss queried whether nfb rules covered the following Though technically different from flaming, which is an unmistakable direct personal attack, trolls often resort to innuendo or misdirection in the pursuit of their objective, which is to create controversy for its own sake, dis...

ES
With respect, it still seems to me that hocus's behaviour is generally tolerated whereas responding to such behaviour by others is not.

I know that you have a thankless task - but that's my opinion.

The other psychological factor in the $2m scenario is how the portfolio was accumulated. If it was accumulated over 20 years of DCAing and then given a big boost by the bubble then the portfolio owner may not be so concerned about a 25% drop - nobody truly believed in the bubble so only lost money t...

Ataloss To an extent I can see some circumstances where it might apply to someone with my way (chicken-little ) of thinking. If I was struggling along with a barebones $500,000/4%/$20,000 a year scenario I'd be very scared if my portfolio dropped 15% and I'd probably immediately cut down to,say...

I've read all of chip's posts and I think understood them at the time but an understanding of that sort of stuff never seems to stay in my mind long enough for me to use it - so this may not be relevant - but I found long ago that if I regularly calculated my net worth I became obsessive about tryin...

With respect, we would all like to insist upon equity. I'm also perfectly capable of charging if someone waves a red flag in my face but I restrain myself - particularly in the current circumstances.

ataloss many of us are skeptical that ss payments will be made- especially to those who are deemed "wealthy" (to be defined by politicians at a future date.) ....... but I'd still prefer the future possibility of $30k in the US rather than the certainty of my own $3K in the UK

hocus Unlike you, I have actually read all the studies I can find on SWRs, "invalid" or not. In the past, jwr very kindly and patiently helped me understand more. Similarly gummy also spent a lot of time and effort explaining things further. My views on SWRs can be summarised in my post da...

jwr No, it is not hocus who consistently play[s] obstructive, destructive, disruptive word games and continually mis-representing the words of other members in order to try to win cheap debating points... Regrettably I was personally on the receiving end of hocus's anti-social behaviour - which is s...

These days I don't usually contribute to SWR discussions but I had assumed from what I had seen previuosly (as an ignorant alien :)) that the magical $1m/4% SWR/$40K-a-year figures were all that applied in the US to a potential retiree and SS was minimal .... if stocks went bust then dog food would ...

I still haven't looked at overseas medical insurance for retiring in low cost areas in complete detail but most of the affordable policies for long term retirement are based on immediate in-patient treatment - OK for a quick triple bypass or whatever but possibly not much good for a kidney transplan...

With my usual procrastination I "accidentally" locked-in a couple of COLA pension/annuities years ago (one nearly 30 years ago). They'll be due in a year or so and I think they'll probably comfortably cover our basic living expenses without having to rely on other investment income - on th...

Chips How did other people respond to the 1987 crash? In the 80's I turned a small sum into a large sum by trading and leverage. Somewhere around the 1987 bottom I chickened out and sold just about everything . I didn't lose any of my original capital but didn't keep very much of my vast profi...
